Innovative Support Structure Enhances Curvature Control in Continuum Robots
A new design improves shape precision by mechanically constraining robot deformations.
Researchers have developed a multi-segment scissor-based support structure that mechanically constrains continuum robots to maintain specific curvature profiles. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional kinematic models that assume fixed curvature profiles, which may not reflect actual mechanical properties during operation.
The design employs Taylor approximations to effectively distribute bending across multiple flexures, utilizing compliant joints for a single-piece manufacturing process. Integrated with a tendon-actuated continuum robot, the structure significantly enhances shape precision and reduces unwanted deformations under load.
